July 2006 Newsletter

July has been windy really windy! Our poor cat, Captain Sam, had gotten so used to leaning into the wind that he fell over when he came into the house for dinner last night! Those of us lucky enough to have a house in Waimea are now looking out over lawns scattered with twigs as the stiff trades sweep the skies clean and scuttle plans for badminton and Frisbee parties. We are getting birds from Honokaa and Paauilo to take the places of the ones that have been swept away to Kailua-Kona and Holualoa. The combination of wind and kipuupuu mist has meant that many an umbrella has met its fate this month, turned inside out and upside down, left to the hydraulic embrace of the transfer station truck.
This rough weather is a reminder to us that one of the main reasons Waimea is so rural and charming is that the condo-people don’t really want to deal with the inconvenience of changing weather and all that it entails. Just look behind the front seat of any Waimea person’s car, and you will see several outfits either strewn or neatly stacked within easy reach. At least Superman had a telephone booth! We have to make our quick changes in the inch or two of space below the steering wheel.
Is it worth it? Of course it is worth it! If you don’t have to worry about the weather you will end up spending time worrying about something far less worthy like your fellow man or your uncertain future in the mahjong club. Plus, there is the whole philosophical side of things, like seeing the bent backs of the trees as a metaphor for the way we have been shaped by the passing experiences we have endured to reach this state of grace and beauty.
Now if that isn’t a lead-in to a real estate ad I don’t know what is!
We have deals at last! Yes! The price range from $500,000 to $800,000 is the new “dead zone” as interest-rate-sensitive families flutter down to the lower realms and greedy speculators now turn slowly in the wind, slashing prices to the bone and then to the marrow itself! This is a sweet time for the savvy real estate buyer seeking to make a fortune off the retiring Boomers or simply secure a rose-covered cottage to dotter around in one day.
Call me if you or anyone you know would like to finally make the dream a reality. Now is the time!
Imua,
