After the Blue Moon - June
by Bill Jardine Jun 20, 2007
Now that summer is rushing in and graduations are almost over, the drying lawns are reminding us that the summer travel season is once again upon us. Waimea families large and small are packing up to visit the grand parents, accept the challenges of summer camps or even visit our national monuments with the millions of other Americans on the road this year.
Cathie and I have arrived at the point in our lives when we look back wistfully at the long road trips we took with the kids in years gone by. At the time we were deadly keen on how to feed everyone and still have enough left for a cheap motel. However, our memories have thankfully discarded the least pleasant episodes in favor of idyllic scenes of familial bliss. Somehow we have not yet been able to forget poor Jana and her motion sickness, however. We took her to the top of Ayer’s Rock in the central Australian desert once, and it was so windy she was flapping between us like a car lot flag. She has turned out so well … considering all we have put her through!
June is the wedding month, and our eldest, Jaisy, is now in charge of weddings at the Fairmont Orchid, and we are so happy to have her back in Hawaii after 12 years on the mainland! The Orchid is happy to have her too, since she relates so well to everyone and can bring Hawaiian culture into just about everything they do. If you have any weddings coming up you should give her a call .
We continue to be impressed with the real estate values now available. Properties are trading much faster now that prices have come down so much, but there are still very attractive buys here and there. The wet-side properties are having to adjust to the values established by Parker Ranch’s Luala’i development, and the process is very painful for those who speculated on “green side” properties a couple of years ago. If you have a half-million for housing, Luala’i is definitely going to set the standard by which all other properties are measured.
Resort condos are also under great distress, since so many were built at the wrong point in the demand cycle and are now begging for buyers. These condos will fill up with retirees in a few short years, so we see very attractive long-term gains for today’s akamai purchasers. Be careful in looking at these condominium offerings, however. The carrying costs can be quite high and difficult to predict. Better yet … call us to assist you !
Your best bet when it comes to real estate is to avoid the impulse to go to the listing agent, who represents the seller. Call Jardine Investment Properties to discuss your specific needs and dreams. That is what we are here for, and we are pretty darn good at it!
